doing so is possible (it’s actually what i do), but requires more configuration on the users end to ensure that dependencies are set up properly. the reason we’re installing r as a cask is due to the fact that the normal “binary” r, installable by brew install r, requires you to download several other dependencies and compile every package from source. In homebrew, a cask is a term for regular mac applications, i.e applications that install to /Applications/. Once homebrew is installed, type this into your terminal: when a new update for r is released, all you need to do is type brew cask upgrade, and homebrew will upgrade r. I’m not sure how familiar you are with package managers, but it’s a very simple and easy way to install applications and programs. Paste this into a terminal to install homebrew: Personally, i prefer to use homebrew to manage nearly everything i download and install onto my mac.
